samsung front load washer 3.6 and dryer 7.0 silver - water left in washer

I purchased this set online during boxing week and am quite happy with it except I am concerned about the amount of water left in the washer at the end of the cycle. When I move the drum after the clothes have been removed, I can hear what sounds like a significant amount of water sloshing around. I cannot see the water and it does drain water during the cycle, but I am wondering if this is normal and am concerned that this may result in the 'moldy smell' that many people complain of. I contacted Samsung and this is their reply;

Please that a little amount of water in the lower drum is normal. This water is used to keep the drum stable at high speed. This water is automatically replaced upon each wash cycle to prevent it from going stale.

My response is 1. It sounds like alot more than 'a little amount of water'

                        2. How is this water replaced i.e. no water drains at the beginning of the cycle - does this mean the next load is washed in this old water?

Anyone else have this problem, any comments?

Bought Same Model

[ Edited ]

Hi

I have not noticed any water in the drum but it does use very little water. We are concerned about towels not coming clean and having a bit of a smell to them. All other clothes are good, it just seems to be the towels.

Any observations?

It's certainly not normal !

All washers should drain properly. If there is water left in the drum the washer is not doing it's job. You must notice your clothes are not as dry as they should be either if that is happening. Something is wrong with your machine. Exchange it, or if it's too late you can at least get Samsung to service it for you.

This sloshing of the water is normal.  Mine was like this even before I used it, right out of the box.  The sloshing is the water weight.  Clothes washers use to have large concrete blocks in the bottom to keep them in place.  Apparently companies has switched to water reservoirs seeing how water is a lot cheaper the concrete.

Sloshing water, is it a concern?

Bought this unit a few days ago. At the end of the cycle the clothes are dry and there is no water in the drum. But I can hear water sloshing when I move the drum after the clothes have been removed. Should this be a concern?

This in fact is normal and not a concern. These units will store a bit of water for various reasons, most of them stated above. However if there is significant water to the point where it is visible in the drum itself, this could be another issue. You will also notice in many of the newer machines there is a small door to the bottom left corner. Inside that door is a drain tube and a collecting basket. The machines equipped with this allow you to drain all that excess water. Unfortunatly the 203ans set does not have this option. It is still a fantastic set and a very inexpensive price point considering the features. Just doesn't have that drain.

is it leveled properly?

Two thoughts that may resolve the issue.

1. Are you sure the unit is leveled properly for the water to be flowing toward the pump? If it is improperly leveled a little bit of water could be left behind that does not quite reach the pump.

2. Sometimes the drain is set higher on the wall than is required by the washer manufacturer. Check your instruction book and see if it mentions how high the drain should be. If it is too high, the pump may not be powerful enough to force all of the water up and out. Whatever couldn't be flushed up and out would flow back into the washer and create the problem you are having.

Yes I am having that problem as well.  I have to run a rinse and spin cycle if I have not done a wash for a couple of days due to the musty stale water smell.

Warranty work is coming.

Re: Bought Same Model

The machine will measure the weight of the load and determine the amount of water needed to clean the clothes.  If your towels have a smell then there is bacteria in the towel fiber, your machine has a sanitary setting. Use this cycle to have the machine heat the water to ~165C to kill the bacteria.  This cycle is great for sheets, towels, undergarments where bacteria lives.  Dont use it all the time it is very hard on the fabric, I suggest to my customers to use it every second or third time they wash their towels.

Use only (HE) High efficiency soaps

If you are using a non HE soap, it can leave a residue in the machine and on the fabrics that can develop an unpleasant odor over time. These new machines are designed to use only the HE soaps. They don't rinse the same as the old machines, and need a more efficiently dissolved cleanser. Non-HE soaps foam up too much and coat the inside of the machine and bacteria can live on this residue.

- Yes, ALL washing machines keep a little bit of water in them after the cycle is complete. This is normal.

- Leave the door of the washing machine open after use. A little airflow can keep that water from becoming stagnant.

- Use only HE soaps so a residue does not build up over time.

- Occasionaly use the Sanitize cycle (with or without clothes in the washer) to remove and kill bacteria and odors.

Follow the above, and you shouldn't have a problem. Even a Top-Load washing machine would have this problem if the lid were airtight. Top Load washers actually retain quite a lot of water in the outer drum after use. If the lid wasn't spaced to allow air to circulate, they'd develop a smell too.

Crack that door open and let it breath. You'll notice a significant reduction in odor almost right away.
