My desktop gets a window popped up with message "Security Tool Warning" and then it goes on to say that my computer is infected with such and such number of infections. I have read on internet blogs that it is a virus/spyware which tries to decieve the user to go into buying the virus protection by providing the credit card information. How can I remove this virus? Is it possible to do it without formatting the HD?

Do you have any existing antivirus program installed already that was unable to fix the problem?
If not, try installing Microsoft Security Essentials and running a scan. It's a good, free program that should hopefully be able to fix your problem.
There are a number of other free antivirus programs out there, but from what I have read, MS Security Essentials is one of the best as far as free programs go, and it comes from a reliable website.

Thanks for the response. I have downloaded the MS security essential but it doesn't get installed on the system and I think the virus/spyware is not allowing it so. I've tried to run/install the downloaded file but no success. I have McCaffe virus protection on my system but it fails to catch this virus

Have you tried running a system restore? That might be able to fix the problem. Note though, that anything that has been saved on your computer after that point will be lost, so it would be a good idea to back up anything important you've done recently.
The other option you have is hooking up with one of the ConnectPro folks on the forums (roparadi and Chris_B come to mind right away for me) and for a fee, they can remotely access your computer and help determine/fix the problem ![]()

I too had an infection recently (Mcafee Enterprise failed to catch it) and displayed fake Security Center warning messages. In my case, I downloaded and ran "TrendMicro House Call 7" and the malware was removed without further issues.
