Any feedback on Samsung 245BW 24" LCD?

Samsung 245BW 24" LCD monitor is a very attractively priced 24" LCD monitor.   Any comments out there in terms of pros and cons of buying this monitor for the home office?

Epark;

One thing to really concider is the space.
its a BEAUTIFUL screen. I love it.
Basically anything that you want to look for when looking for ANY monitor would contrast ratio, and response time.
If you are not going to be gaming or watching any movies, then having a 5ms+ response time would be fine. Im sure 8ms would be fine to... but im picky.
I also recommend a 1000:1 contrast ratio.

If you dont know the spec's on this screen,
3000:1 Contrast ratio. [ Thats awesome ]
5ms Response time
It has both VGA and DVI inputs, the DVI is digital.. use that if you have the ability on the back of your computer.
HDCP TOO!
1920x1200 max resoloution.
400CD/m2 brightness.

Hope that helps you out a bit. I know you said this is for a home office. But PROMISE you play some games on it. It will look GREAT!

It's a good start

I am waiting for them to come out witha 27" or 32". I have had a 19 and 21 for over 3 years and am using a Prima 27" for PC gaming right now. The picture quality is ok for DVD and games, but brutal for excal and email. I am looking forward to higher end monitors.

You mention desk space is a concern, I like theLCD TV better becasue of the build in speakers. I have a small child at home and can't be blasting loud music anyway. Wondering if Samsanf has larger than 24" planned for the near future.

Monitors

Hi,

Samsung actually has monitors in that size right now!

The Samsung 275T
WebID: 10086732
Resolution: 1920x1200
Contrast Ratio: 3000:1
Response Time: 6ms
Connections : DVI (with HDCP) and VGA.

The Samsung 305T
WebID: 10085556
Resolution: 2560 x 1600
Contrast Ratio: 1000:1
Response Time: 6ms
Connections : DVI (with HDCP) and VGA.

Both are excellent monitors in the 27 to 30 inch range, and although the do not have speakers built in will provide an excellent gaming experience! They will also provide the crispness you are looking for with email and excel.

Thank you for your question.

Hello epark,
I have been hearing a lot of great things about that monitor. Customer feedback has been great, and most people fall in love with it as soon as they see it. Especially with a nice high resolution photo as the desktop background.

The only negative comment that I have heard is that depending on the layout of your workspace, that size of the screen can be quite daunting. My biggest recommendation in that case has been to make a small step down to 22" HP 2207, which in my opinion is one of the nicest monitors that we have ever carried.

The Samsung 245BW 24" LCD is a very nice looking monitor, but it lacks some of the inputs and features that the LGL246WP and the HP W2207 has in that they both rotate 90 degrees and the LG has component and HDMI inputs.  If customers are looking for using the monitor as a TV, and they want the Samsung brand they have to jump up to the 27" version for more money.  But with newer HD cable boxes and DVD players they can output to the DVI using an HDMI to DVI cable.

Hello Epark,

The Samsung 245bw is a great choice for someone looking for a larger screen for gaming or office work.

The only draw back to this monitor is that it has a very limited viewing angle which makes it a poor choice when used for graphics work. In this instance the samsung 275tw or the 305tw is the monitor I would recommend.

A few more points

I just bought the Samsung 245BW monitor today. I am very happy with it. The picture is crisp and clear, and the colors are pure. This was much better than the experiences I had with the 931BW (which I kept, it was fine), 206BW (which I returned twice), and 226BW (which I returned). The 245BW far exceeds the 3 models lower than it in picture quality. I actually managed to get a true "S" panel with my 245BW, which was impossible to find in the 226BW model.

The base is what sets this monitor apart from the other Samsung models. This base actually swivels with internal bearings and has a really smooth height adjustment. The lower models offer no such luxury. I also wanted to mention that there is the ability to support portrait rotation and this is not a modification. Removal of the four screws holding the base, just as for wall mounting, reveals a locking screw in the 90 degree rotation mechanism for shipping. Remove this screw to enable the rotation. To me, this "hidden" feature makes this the perfect LCD monitor.

Thanks, pillick: that's a deal-maker of a hidden feature!

I was dancing around the decision to buy or not buy the 245bw while it's on sale at my local FS, and I was thinking about the fact that I have a dual-monitor setup now with two Samsung 19"-ers side by side, both in portrait position, for large displays of manuscript pages. When I was in the store today, looking at the 245bw, I tried to rotate the screen, but even though the back attachment LOOKED like it would pivot, it didn't budge. With a screen this large, I'll probably be happy with two pages side by side on the one screen in landscape mode, but it's great to know that a bit of screwdriver work will enable a pivot joint on it, JIC I think I want it that way some day. Thanks, m'friend.

Pillick, I just wanted to thank you for the portrait tip!...

Pillick, I just wanted to thank you for the portrait tip!

I've had this 24" monitor for a few months now. It blew me away the first time I set it up. My old 17" CRT monitor didn't come close to this thing.
I thought I knew what this 24" badboy was capable of, but I was mistaken.
I've rediscovered the sheer size of this beast! The height of it is simply amazing..... no more long scrolling on webpages or lengthy emails.

Removing the screw was a snap. And For those who are worried about damaging the monitor, don't worry. Just follow pillick's instructions and remove the 4 screws holding the base stand.
Then you should see a tiny screw next to the tilting mechanism. Remove that and reassemble the stand. Now you can freely rotate the monitor at will.

One thing to note: The preset portrait mode in NVIDIA control panel isn't what you want. I had to choose the *90 degrees to the right - "inverted portrait mode"*

This is because the monitor rotates in the opposite direction of the preset.
Woohooo! :-)
