All the news that fits...in the screen, that is.

cutandpaste.jpgEarlier this week Apple announced that it had shipped over 1.5 BILLION iPhone / iPod Touch applications in a year:
“The App Store is like nothing the industry has ever seen before in both scale and quality,” said Steve Jobs, Apple’s CEO. “With 1.5 billion apps downloaded, it is going to be very hard for others to catch up.”

You can be forgiven if you missed the announcement, but to help you avoid such embarrassment in future, I'm going to overview some cool News apps that I use on my iTouch. These are 'hard news' apps for the most part, not TV schedule or niche specific news..I may cover some of those in another post.

And remember, you can use Safari to browse to any news organizaiton's website -- the apps I'm overviewing are either custom programmed iPhone apps or iPhone optimized websites managed by the news organization.

International
The New York Times app is one of the slickest I've seen. It's a custom designed app that amazingly brings the depth and breadth of the NY Times to your mobile device. Crosswords not included, but the full list of features are found on the FAQ.

The Wall Street Journal
Another very slick news app. Content has more of an American slant to it, but if you're looking for another neat news-reading app, check it out.

lemond-iphn.jpgLe Monde - France
I'm in the midst of upgrading my French language skills, so this one was a no-brainer for me to check out.

Reuters (News Agency)
A news agency is more of a news aggregator, than a broadcaster. Reuters has journalist across the planet, generating content daily. A great app for getting a more 'balanced' perspective of world events.

Google News (News Agency -- sorta)
Similar to Reuters, except that the news is prioritized by their news placement algorithm,  Google News gives you a great view of the Google News navigation structure in an iPhone environment.

Canadian
cbc-iphn.jpgCBC
CBC news website formatted for the iPhone Safari browser.

Globe and Mail
This one is kinda cool as it's developed by Spreed -- a development company focused on speed reading. The Globe and Mail app allows you to tweak your reading speed as you catch up on your news.

It's news to me!

Obviously I've not even started to scratch the surface of iPhone news apps, so help me out! Fill in the blanks, so to speak -- what iPhone news apps do you use to keep up-to-date?
