Social Media Sensation: the Old Spice Guy?

by on 07-13-2010 10:34 PM - last edited on 07-13-2010 10:34 PM

By now you’ve likely seen the Old Spice Superbowl ad where a buff and attractive specimen of the maleness maneuvers through a highly improbable selection of scenes, while speaking well-written and witty prose promoting himself as ‘the man your man could smell like’.

It’s an awesome spot because it’s fun, seems highly improbable, and is irreverent.

And now it’s a Social Media Sensation. Yes he’s flogging a product I may never use, but gosh if it isn’t a clever and entertaining way to go about it.

Over the last few days, the Old Spice Guy has been using YouTube to respond to comments and messages on various social media channels. And this is within hours of the comment or tweet being posted.  Old Spice really gets social media by having this ‘instant’ rapport between their audience and their ‘Old Spice Guy’ character. Over the course of a few hours, he’s even started flirting with @Alyssa_Milano! Check them out.

On Twitter, @TheEllenShow wrote "Have ya'll seen my friend @IsaiahMustafa's new Old Spice commercial? So funny and so clever. http://bit.ly/avcpGA "

On Twitter, Alyssa_Milano wrote "GENIUS. Shirtless Old Spice guy replies on Twitter w/ hilarious personalized videos http://tnw.to/16XQ3 /via @Zee"

On Twitter, Alyssa_Milano wrote "Are you flirting with me, @oldspice guy?"

Heh. Good, clean fun.
