The greatest geek gift of my Christmas past is still one I enjoy in this Christmas present. Read more...
As our American friends leave turkey-day behind them, and the food filled holiday season approaches, I thought I'd take a look at Lose It! a well made little iPhone app. that has much more under the hood than a first glance reveals. Read more...
The National Film Board of Canada is a treasure to this country. It has in its archives more than 13 000 films that have collected more than 5 000 awards - not bad odds. In January the NFB opened up the archives to digitize for the web, placing the best of it's content in one place for you to view on demand. The website was a hit and this fall the NFB took the next step with the release of an iPhone app. "Canadians paid for these films - they should be able to watch them." Read more...

The iPhone still doesn't have a radio in it, but there are numerous radio apps to get streaming on your device. CBC, NPR, official radio station ones, bulk streaming. Some are only in the US iTunes store blocking you out of a long list of stations, but I've found a brililant global radio streaming app that will also double as a clock radio. Read more...

Now that the days are getting shorter and the mornings and evenings are getting cooler, it's time to set aside your Bud Light with Lime for another season and cozy up with a Cabernet. The iPhone was never just a phone. It has always been more. After using it for just a few days I quickly understood the power of the "Jesus Phone." When we live with our data in the cloud, all we need is a clean and easy interface to get into that cloud. The iPhone is the most efficient way to get online and get things done. Whether you want to use it to track a run, level a frame or track your stocks - you've seen the commercial, there's an app for that. Read more...
Just two weeks ago I was hailing Foursquare as a tool greater than Google. Today, I deleted it from the influential front page of apps on my iPhone. While I still maintain that Foursquare is a great tourist application to get location based advice and insight, the local angle of Foursquare becomes boring very quickly. Read more...

The iPhone is the fastest growing camera on the web. Whether it be videos uploaded to YouTube or photos on Flickr, we're using our iPhone to capture memories and images in an instant to share them with the world. Now while uploading photos and video to the internet is a great way to share your work, there really is no substitute for a physical image. HP has a great new app for the iPhone that makes printing your pics easy without any wires, set up or anything. Read more...
Perhaps Jason Calacanis is on to something. About 2 years ago, the internet startup star launched something he called a "human powered search engine." Mahalo would have it's search results catalogued by people. It's that same human powered search that is allowing Twitter, Foursquare, Yelp and a little thing called GPS to change the way search is conductedand the real time information on the go they create blows Google off the map. Next to my iPhone, my favorite gadget is my Garmin Forerunner 305. I've had this device, in various editions, on my wrist when I run and ride for nearly 7 years. I've seen some Twitter chatter about a similar app for the iPhone and decided to test it out. RunKeeper is a free app (a premium version is available for $9.99) that lets you perform similar tricks using the GPS abilities of your iPhone. Read more...
They say the newspaper is dead. I say 'not so'! Well, maybe the paper part, but news gathering, editing, and publishing is a process that's been evolving online for a while. My daily mobile fix arrives via my iPod Touch... Read more...
I saw someone on Twitter mention they were going to the Apple store to get an iPod Touch for their 3 year old. I was aghast. Read more...
The new iPhone 3.0 software was released yesterday, and with it a promise of a more powerful performance for all, but not necessarily a faster speed - for that, you'll need the new iPhone 3GS which will be released tomorrow morning. The new iPhone 3.0 software does address some performance issues, so I thought a comparison experiment of new and old would be in order to see how impressive the software upgrade is. Read more...
Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference is on the horizon (June 8-12) and the new iPhone 3.0 software is ready, waiting to be unleashed. Packed inside more than 100 features - everything from the ability to write emails in landscape to MMS and hey, cut and paste. Wow. But some things are still missing. There's rumour a Mac Tablet will be unveiled this week - bigger than an iPhone, smaller than a laptop and probably similar to the CrunchPad. While that would be nice, I'd settle for one more upgrade in the iPhone 3.0 software - playlists for my apps. Read more...
