A few things I don't like about the iPad

by on 04-29-2010 04:58 PM

I've had my iPad for about four-ish days now, and while I think it's an amazing device and worth its cost and praise, there are some things that I don't like about it. I'm not blind to the iPad's flaws, so here are a few that have been bugging me the most.

  • No multitasking. Yeah, this isn't new, but it is still worth harping on. Can I stay logged into Skype and read my feeds with Fever? Nope. Listen to the CBC through their app and write something? No. I certainly hope this changes soon.
  • The screen orientation seems to have a mind of its own sometimes. I figure it's all the motion sensing and the accelerometer, but it can be darn annoying.
  • Lots of book store options. You'd think this would be a good thing, but really it bugs me. (competitor) has great selection, but I don't like the app very much. Apple has a better app, but the selection is growing slowly. Not to mention I have to buy through my U.S. iTunes account for the time being, whereas from (competitor) I can just use my Canadian credit card. It's not likely to ever happen, but I'd like to just be able to buy a book from anyone and read it on my iPad with iBooks.
  • Syncing up files isn't as easy as I'd like. I think I've got things set with DropBox, GoodReader, SimpleNote and Notational Velocity, but it's not a piece of cake.
All told, I think these are minor things. I love reading books on it. I know I'll be buying more and more books for it, not only that I don't know how many paper books I'll be buying in the future.
I'm not playing many games on it, but I am jotting basic notes and stuff on it. I can nearly touch type. If I could get one of my Bluetooth keyboards attached, I bet I could do a lot more work on it.
Not convinced yet? Well wait until my next post ... the things I love about the iPad.

Okay. I admit it. This thing is starting to interest me. I don't generally go for the iProduct. Usually a generic version of the same product will do more for a lot less money, but the iPad is starting to sound like something I could get on board with.

You have my attention.

And with today's rumour mill flying that the HP Slate may not be coming...  I'm now a bit depressed.  So that means do I go for an iPad (which I'm not sure I'm willing to with this current iteration - in part for the reasons above, as well as other things), or do I try for something else, or do I give up on tablets altogether again for the next while.  Alas now I'm torn.

Krypto don't feel bad...I think HP & MSFT just miscalculated how great the iPad would be. The positive reviews its general impressive uptake, well, I think all tablet makers should be re-jigging their plans to stay in step.
