Things I love about my iPad--the short list

by on 04-30-2010 01:20 PM - last edited on 04-30-2010 01:23 PM

Since talking about all the things I love about my iPad would: a) take a long time and lead to blog rambling and b) will further solidify your feeling that I'm just a Mac fan boy, I'm going to keep this short and sweet.

Or at least I'll try.

  • Books, books, books. Did I mention I love to read on my iPad? I don't find the screen hard on my eyes (of course my eyes are shot anyway) and I don't find the iPad too heavy to hold. Really not much worse than a hardcover book.
  • (nearly) Touch typing. People said they could almost touch type on the iPad in landscape mode, and I'm getting pretty good at it myself. Set it down on a table and I can bang out an email or thought pretty easily.
  • The screen, in general. Look, honestly it's gorgeous. Maybe that doesn't matter a ton, but looking at movies, pictures, just anything is lovely.
  • Letting me get away from my desk and computer. Since I can read, email, and many other things on my iPad, I'm finding that I just close my laptop and go upstairs and watch TV, read, or whatever with, gasp, my fiancée. Yep, human interaction. If I have my laptop upstairs with me, I easily get sucked into it. Also with my laptop on my lap it's harder to just stop and start something. Just holding the iPad, I just set it down. Done.
  • It looks and feels cool and futuristic. Don't underestimate how cool it feels. Really, just holding the device I feel like I'm on Star Trek (yep there's an app for that).

Here are some shots from my iPad. See? Gorgeous.

I'm pulling down a lot of useful apps for my iPad; trying to make it as much a work device as a play device. Of course 95% of the time when I pull it out on the bus, people ask me about it, and probably 90% of the people who see it say they'll probably get one (hey Apple, where's my commission!).

The biggest question facing the iPad was is it hot or hype. Honestly it's hot. Like the iPhone, the iPad has changed how we will use both computers and the Internet. Already companies involved in tablets and ereaders are changing their plans— Apple iPad's tablet competition drop like flies, e-book readers next | The Apple Core | ZDNet.com —which is just smart business. So with the 3G version of the iPad available today in the States— iPad 3G Available At 5PM This Afternoon, Retail Stores Closed Between 4PM-5PM to Prep | Cult of Mac —let's figure that the iPad is only going to gain momentum. So imagine what's going to happen next month when the rest of the world gets their hands on iPads?

Yeah, exactly.

Yeah. I'm gonna have to see this thing for myself. Hold it. Type on it. It sounds right up my alley.

I was thinking about a net-book. But this sounds much more user friendly.

Kayne314, it is more user friendly for sure. Yes, I do encourage you to look at it, hold it, and try it. It isn't a perfect device nor suited to everything, but it is amazing at what it does.
