Sega Announces Sonic Colors, Sonic 4 Delay + New Platform

by on 05-31-2010 11:59 AM - last edited on 05-31-2010 12:06 PM

Sega's been on a roll lately, announcing a flurry of Sonic updates on their corporate blog including a brand new game, and updates on the much-anticipated 2D revival of Sonic.

Last Wednesday Sega surprised us with the reveal of Sonic Colors , an all-new action-adventure game set to hit the Wii and Nintendo DS in holiday 2010.  The game sets our blue hedgehog friend in theme park-inspired worlds as he attempts to rescue a colourful alien race from the clutches of the wily Dr. Eggman.  The evil doctor has been taken the alien race, known as Wisps, prisoner on an amusement park seen orbiting the home planet of Sonic the Hedgehog and it's up to our hero to tap into the aliens' mysterious colourful energy to help them escape.

The Wii version of Sonic Colors will seamlessly combine both 3D and classic 2D gameplay perspectives, while the Nintendo DS version is said to take "full advantage of the console's dual screen", perhaps similar to Sonic Rush's utilization of both screens for gameplay.

The game will feature Sonic's signature trail-blazing super speed and obstacle navigation through colourful, animated planets.  Going by the debut trailer (seen below) it looks like Sonic's trusty sidekick Tails is set to make his appearance, perhaps hinting at multiple selectable characters or even co-operative play.  The alien Wisps possess a unique "Color Power" that, once absorbed by Sonic, imbue him with special abilities to help him speed through the various theme park inspired worlds.  As examples, Wisps can grant Sonic the power to open new paths through a stage by drilling into the ground, or enable him to enter laser mode and speed through a level as if obstacles weren't there.  Wisp powers-up can be stacked together and increases Sonic's boost gauge at a faster rate.

Features will be unique to both the Wii and Nintendo DS versions, such as exclusive Wisp power-ups, ensuring a different experience depending on the platform played.

In other Sonic news, Sega issued a press earlier this month about their upcoming 2D revival game, Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episode 1 , stating that the game will slip from its summer release and will now drop in the "latter half of 2010".  Sorry Sonic fans, you'll have to wait a little bit longer, but rest assured that Sega will be using this additional development time to focus on the keeping the game quality top-notch, and to continue to refine and balance the levels and interface, and maintain the high level of polish Sonic fans have come to expect, given its classic Genesis era inspiration.

Sega also took this opportunity to announce that Sonic 4 will be coming to the iPhone and iPod Touch via Apple's iTunes App Store.  The game was already previously announced for release on the Xbox Live Arcade, PlayStation Network, and Nintendo's WiiWare service.

In case you missed it, here's the latest trailer for Sonic 4 , featuring gameplay from the Splash Hill Zone:

Really looking forward to Sonic Colors. Keep thinking it reminds me of Heroes mixed with Unleashed. Either way, I'm sure the gameplay will be unique as always.
